Paul Masters
I’ve worked for many years on commercial radio in the midlands, including lengthy stints at BRMB (& Xtra-AM) as a tech op with some presenting, then presenting my own shows on Radio Wyvern, Classic Hits, Sunshine Radio, and now at Big City Radio.

When I was very young my aunt asked me if I wanted to be a Disc Jockey. I remember thinking that I was not really interested in horses. However, in 1974 when BRMB hit the airwaves, suddenly radio was not just something that came from London, but from “up the road”… and it was so exciting that my cousin and I cycled from Catshill in Bromsgrove to BRMB in Aston; a highly dangerous thing to do! But we had passed our cycle proficiency tests, so we survived.

We had hours of fun in our school holidays introducing records “radio DJ style” on an old 1960’s record player even though we only had 3 records. Eventually we got invited to BRMB to see Ed Doolan present his show, and that’s when I knew that one day I wanted to work in radio.

We then started doing discos, having built the equipment using two old record players and making spotlights out of empty catering sized coffee tins. They worked really well, thought today this would be deemed way too dangerous, but once again we survived… and our record collections grew.
In 1977 I joined Hospital Radio Bromsgrove, which gave me the skills to move into commercial radio.
